The titles of high school valedictorian and salutatorian are bestowed to the two top-ranking academic performers of a graduating class. This is a significant achievement and it speaks to the students’ commitment, dedication, and academic excellence during their four years in high school. This year this normally impressive honor is even more meaningful because the valedictorian and salutatorian of Trinity’s 2023 graduating class are twin brothers, Antonio and Jose Centenera. 

We wanted to get some insight into the minds and dynamic of this high-achieving sibling duo, and this is what we learned:

How does it feel to be valedictorian/salutatorian?

Antonio: “ I feel honored and extremely grateful for the support of my family, friends, and teachers.”
Jose: “It feels great! I am happy with the quality of work I put forward during my time at Trinity and it’s an awesome feeling to share this success with my brother.”

How did growing up with a talented twin contributed to where you are now? Did you compete with one another? Collaborate to make each other better?

Antonio: “I wouldn’t say that Jose and I consciously compete with each other. It’s always an encouragement to have him with me. We feed off of each other’s energy and are inspired by each other’s hard work.”
Jose: “Growing up with such a talented twin definitely contributed a lot to where I am today both as a student and as a person. There was plenty of competition; it was quite possibly the most prominent driving force behind our success. However, competitive or not, we always pushed each other to do the best we could and worked together as a team. We kept each other accountable. It’s nice to have a built-in study partner!”

What was the most challenging part of high school?

Antonio: “The most challenging part of High School for me has been time management. Juggling high school extracurriculars, music, sports, and academics can feel like drowning at first, but things become easier with time and persistence.”
Jose: “The most challenging part of Highs School for me was time management. Between work, school, and sports, it can be difficult to stay on top of things. High School definitely improved my time management skills.”

What are your plans for after Trinity?

Antonio: “I will attend Rice University/The Shepherd School of Music to double major in piano performance and mathematics.”
Jose: “I am committed to Catholic University of America where I plan to study finance. In the long run, I’m hoping to become a financial advisor or possibly start my own business.”

What advice do you have for your fellow students?

Antonio: “My advice is to be kind to everyone. Nothing is more important.”
Jose: “My advice to my fellow students is to enjoy the time you have. Life moves quicker than anyone realizes. Enjoy the current moments for what they are.”

Congratulations to Antonio and Jose on this hard-earned and well-deserved honor. As they continue to pursue their passions, we know they will approach them with the same zeal and tenacity they showed at Trinity.
